Breaking Barriers in Tech: Michelle’s Experience As a Technical Interview Coach at CodePath

The following account was shared by Michelle Koo, a volunteer Technical Interview Coach at CodePath.

I first heard about the CodePath Technical Interview Coach volunteering opportunity through their collaboration with Workday. I was instantly impressed with how organized CodePath is about its mission, materials, and Technical Interview Prep (TIP) course structure.

As an engineer, I know how vital internships are to a student’s engineering career, and I remember feeling unsure about how to prepare for internship interviews as a college student myself. And that’s exactly the gap that CodePath is filling with its Technical Interview Coach volunteering opportunity.

I’ve been a Technical Interview Coach for about four years now. What I love about the experience is how organized the processes are and how easy they make it for me to show up. Every week, CodePath shares a clear plan with me that contains the exact questions to ask the students. This means I can review the questions in advance and focus on interacting with the students. Most of the time, the students are able to find the answers to the questions themselves — my job is to guide them through the process and the “how” of the answer.

One of the things I still remember from my first year as a Technical Interview Coach is the CEO of CodePath telling us about how tech is for everyone, regardless of which college you went to or what GPA you have. It all comes down to the interview process, and that’s exactly what CodePath guides you through. As a Technical Interview Coach, I was so glad to be able to give back to the community and help students who are just starting out in their careers. Volunteering with CodePath has been a pleasure, and it’s such a wonderful way for professionals to learn as they go!
