Mentoring the Next Tech Generation: Gaurav’s Journey as a Volunteer at CodePath
The following account was shared by Gaurav Sharma, Senior Manager of Software Engineering at Capital One and CodePath Resume Review Week Volunteer.
When I first started in tech over 18 years ago, resources and guidance were scarce, and I had to navigate the industry with little support. That’s why volunteering with CodePath has been such a rewarding experience for me. It’s a chance to give back and help students navigate the early stages of their careers with the guidance I wish I had.
My colleagues at Capital One had shared their positive experiences volunteering with CodePath, which piqued my interest. I was eager to make a meaningful impact, and Resume Review Week offered the perfect opportunity to do so. I participated in multiple sessions, and each time I was impressed by how prepared and eager the students were! These students, many who’ve had no industry exposure or support, came to our sessions with resumes in hand and a gleam in their eyes, ready to take the next step toward their tech careers.
During each session, we went through their resumes section by section, discussing how they could better showcase their talents and stand out to recruiters. The students were incredibly receptive to feedback, and it was clear that they were already benefiting from the education they were receiving at CodePath.
Volunteering with CodePath was not just about giving advice; it was about connecting with students on a personal level, understanding their unique journeys, and helping them build the confidence to pursue their goals. It’s a privilege to play a part in their development, and it’s exciting to think that some of them might become my colleagues at Capital One one day!
I highly recommend volunteering with CodePath to any industry professional who wants to make an impact on the next generation of tech. This is more than just a volunteer opportunity; it’s a chance to contribute to the future of the tech industry and help students achieve their dreams.
